BIODIESEL

A MINNESOTA SUPERHERO

Minnesota was the first state in the nation to require biodiesel be blended with diesel. What started out nearly 20 years ago as a way to find value for the soybean oil captured when crushing soybeans for food has turned into so much more. The numbers speak volumes.

1,252,967 Tons of CO2 removed from air
246,000 Annual vehicle emissions removed
80 % less GHGs compared to petroleum
47 % Less particulate matter

BIODIESEL'S SUPER POWERS

Breathing easy

In 2020, using a 20% biodiesel blend in the summer and a 5% biodiesel blend in the winter removed an estimated 1,252,967 tons of CO2 from the air. This is like removing the emissions of nearly 246,000 passenger vehicles each year.

Capturing carbon

Using plant-based fuel sources such as soybeans means not only do renewable fuels emit less carbon and other harmful emissions, but during growth, the plants capture carbon. Now that’s a potent combination of super powers.

Powering MN

For every 1 million gallons of production, biodiesel contributes $22.8 million in statewide total economic output and supports 73 jobs. As a whole, biodiesel’s total economic impact is roughly $1.7 billion annually and the industry supports nearly 5,400 jobs in Minnesota.

Learn more about the campaign A reliable solution For the next several months, biodiesel’s carbon-reduction message will be splashed across dozens of Metro Transit buses in a comic book-themed campaign.

Particulate-Matter-villain
According to a recent National Biodiesel Board study, switching to B100 (100% biodiesel) would create a 45% reduction in cancer risk when heavy-duty trucks such as semis use B100, and 203,000 fewer or lessened asthma attacks.
Using fuel made from B100 in place of petroleum heating oil, that same study found an 86% reduced cancer risk and 17,000 fewer lung problems.
