MN Fuel Quality Testing Program

As Minnesota Governor Pawlenty and Minnesota Legislation will be proposing a B5 mandate in 2008 followed by a B20 mandate in 2015, we need to make certain that biodiesel produced by the state of Minnesota is of the highest quality. As we cannot regulate the imports of biodiesel from other states, we need to ensure that biodiesel produced statewide is held to the highest standard. We will do this through a series of random testing in order to ensure that the quality of fuel being produced in Minnesota meets all ASTM requirements. By using a third party lab, not affiliated with the production facility, as well as collecting samples un-announced, we can test the quality of the fuel to guarantee that the end user is getting top quality product. In doing this we can reassure the bio-diesel user that Minnesota production facilities are operating at maximum efficiency and precision.

These random samples will be tested per ASTM and EN specifications as approved.  Those specifications are:

  • API Gravity
  • Total Glycerin content
  • Acid Number
  • Cold Soak Filter Test
  • Cloud Point
  • KF Moisture
  • Free Glycerin content
  • Mono/Di/Tri-glyceride content
  • Contamination (EN12662)

These tests DO NOT test for a full compliance to ASTM 6751 specification but striclty the elements having the most direct relationship to cold weather operability and stability of the B100 being produced.
